Ronald Erwin McNair was one of the first three Black Astronauts chosen in 1978. On this day in 1986, he was one of the crew members aboard during the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.



 


Zora Neale Hurston, anthropologist, teacher, folklorist, ethnographer, writer, and filmmaker died on this day in 1960 in Florida.





 










 



The Free Africa Society was organized by Bishop Richard Allen and Reverend Absalom Jones on this day in 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its objective was to “provide mutual aid for free Africans and their descendants” in Philadelphia.
