The Morant Bay rebellion began on this day in 1865 when Paul Bogle led more than 200 Black men and women into the town of Morant Bay, Jamaica to protest an arrest. The group was fired upon at the Courthouse, and it went ahead and rebelled and seized the town. Troops were sent after Bogle and his men, and in the end, over 800 black people were killed by troops and executed. The rebellion became a major turning point in Jamaica's history.

On this day in 1887, inventor Alexander Miles was granted patents for the safety improvements he made to the electric elevator. He improved the method of the opening and closing of elevator doors; and he improved the closing of the opening to the elevator shaft when an elevator was not on that floor.
