Akwasi Osei

Ralph J. Bunche was one of America’s major diplomats in the middle of the 20th Century. On this day in 1949, the NAACP honored him with their Spingarn Award, a precursor to the Nobel Prize he won a year later.




 


On this day in 1841, the former enslaved Africans who had rebelled and taken over the Amistad slave ship and had been freed by the United States Supreme Court, returned to their homes in West Africa.















On this day in 1922, Marcus Garvey, self-described ‘Provisional President of African’, gave a speech on this day in 1922 extolling the principles of his Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA).
