Hastings Kamuzu Banda was one of the early African leaders who spent time at American institutions and combined anti-segregationist struggles with anti-colonial fights. He may have been born on this day in 1906. He eventually returned to Malawi, where for he served as Prime Minister and later President for the next 30 years.
