On this day in 1985, to drive out residents of a home on 6221 Osage Avenue, the City of Philadelphia dropped a bomb on the roof of the house. When the smoke cleared, six adults and five children in the house were killed. Over sixty homes in a two-block city, area went up in the flames. The Mayor of Philadelphia was Wilson Goode, a Black man. The residents of 6221 Osage Avenue were members of MOVE, an African nationalist organization.

Joseph Louis Barrow, nicknamed the Brown Bomber, popularly known as Joe Louis, was born on this day in 1914 in Lafayette, Alabama. He became boxing’s heavyweight champion of the world, and it changed his life. In the era of Jim Crow, Louis would become every Black person; his victories in the ring were considered major blows against segregation. He was arguably the best-known Black person in the U.S.
