Henry Jay Lewis, child prodigy, was on this day in 1968 named the Conductor and Musical Director of the New Jersey Symphony. He was the first African American leader of a major symphony orchestra in the US.


 




Nathaniel Adams Coles, professionally known as Nat King Cole, died on this day in 1965 in Santa Monica, California. He was a singer, songwriter and jazz performer.
