The Jail-In Movement started on this day in 1961 in Rock Hill, South Carolina when nine young Blacks insisted on a jail term as opposed to paying a fine after being arrested at a lunch counter. The Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee sang “Jail, no bail”.


 

The first free Africans who started the new nation that became Liberia set sail on this day in 1820 from New York Harbor.


 





Tennis great Arthur Ashe dies on this day in 1993 in New York City.



 






On this day in 1945, Reggae music legend Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley is born in Nine Mile, St. Ann Parish in Jamaica.
