Passed on January 31, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified on this day, December 6 in 1865. It abolished slavery in the United States; all enslaved African were legally free. However, as the law said, it made an exception for those who would have been convicted and punished to slave-like status.
