On this day in 1859, John Brown was put to death for leading a raid on the United States Armory at Harper’s Ferry, then in Virginia. His aim was to arm the enslaved and others so inclined to violently overthrow the slave system. His action hastened the Civil War.



 


Archie Griffin made history on this day in 1975 when he won the Heisman Trophy for the second consecutive time.
