Historian, writer, and educator Carter Goodwin Woodson was born on this day in 1875 in Virginia. Dr. Woodson has been called the father of Black History after he founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), which went on to institute Negro History Week, now Black History Month.



 


On this day in 1828, David Walker delivered a speech titled the Necessity of A General Union Among us that argued for African unity. A year later, he produced his revolutionary “Appeal, in Four Articles, together with a Preamble, to the Colored Peoples of the World, but in Particular and Very Expressly to those of the United States of America”
