Ella Josephine Baker was born on this day in 1903 in Virginia; she went on to become one of the most influential movers of the Civil Rights Movements. Indeed, she has been dubbed the Mother of the Civil Rights Movement. She ran the NAACP New York office from 1938 to 1953; the Southern Christian Leadership Conference from 1957 to 1960; and helped shepherd the Student Non-Violent Coordination Committee (SNCC).
