Jamaica proclaimed itself as an independent country under the British Crown on this day in 1962.

On this day in 1965, after a long struggle that included the deaths of many people, President Johnson signed into law the Voting Rights Act. This law did away with state and local barriers that prevented Black people and others from voting.
