On this day in 1991, Rodney King was beaten to a pulp by Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). This assault, which was captured on video, became a rallying cry against Police Brutality especially after the officers were acquitted and discharged in court. This led to the L.A. Uprising of 1992.


Thomas L. Jennings, a tradesman, inventor, entrepreneur, and an abolitionist, won a patent for the commercial dry-cleaning process called ‘dry scouring’ on this day in 1821. He is considered the first of African descent to be granted a patent.
