On this day in 1960, Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam, made a call for the establishment of an independent Black nation in America.



 


On this day in 1966, Stokely Carmichael, also known as Kwame Touré, after his appointment as the new Chairman of the Students Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), gave a speech on the new concept of Black Power.



 


Whitney Young, Executive Director of the national Urban League and Civil Rights activist was born in Kentucky.
