On this day in 1899, L.C. Bailey was granted a patent for the folding bed.



 



Nelson Mandela, arguably Africa’s most popular and influential leader, was born on this day in 1918 in the Transkei, South Africa.







 

The Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment was made up of free Africans. On this day in 1863, it led a famous assault on Fort Wagner in Charleston, SC. during the Civil War. This was immortalized in the 1989 film, Glory.
