Isaiah Montgomery leads the establishment of an all African American town known as Mount Bayou in Mississippi in 1887.


F. M. Jones is granted patents on this day in 1949 for a starter generator and an air conditioning unit.

In 1951 on this day, Governor Adlai Stevenson activated the National Guard to curb disturbances. Over 3,000 whites tried to block a Black family from moving into Cicero, Illinois, an all-white town.

Troops from the National Guard were deployed to impose a limited martial law to Cambridge, Maryland. This was to curb skirmishes between civil rights demonstrators and others who opposed them.
