Congressional Reconstruction Act of 1867

After two years of rejecting Union demands for a new dispensation, South Carolina was forced by the Congressional Reconstruction Act of 1867 to decide in a constitutional convention to create a new government. On this day in 1867, the convention met, with former enslaved who made up the majority fully voting to hold a convention to create a new political order in South Carolina.

The first Anti-Slavery newspaper devoted to the abolition of slavery ended publishing on this day in 1820. It was published by Elihu Embree at Jonesborough in Tennessee.
